Locomotive Livery Profiles – SRA Candy Livery
The newly established State Rail Authority of NSW and been formed in 1981 superseding the former NSWR, they wanted a new image mainly brought on by the success of the visual impact that the XPT had on the public, the SRA wanted something similar of all their trains.
In late 1981, the SRA appointed ‘Phil Belbin’ to the project of designing this new image, under the direction of the Chief Executive ‘David Hill’ & the chief mechanical engineer ‘John Brew’, work commenced on designing and ironing out a new livery with a good visibility safety level.
Finally after 120 colour concepts were prepared and narrowed down to the chosen livery, known as the Candy livery (or other names Belbin or lollipop)
The scheme was an all over red body with a thin yellow stripe atop a thicker orange stripe atop a White stripe, with black under gear, and initially a silver roof (later grey, white, then all over red depending on the class).
The 1st item of rollingstock to see the light of day in this new livery was Economy class a/c carriage SFS2277 painted at Eveleigh Carriage Works in Mid July 1982.
The livery was officially released at 11.30am on 17th August 1982 at the public unveiling held on platform5 of Sydney Terminal – 44100, FH2230, SFS2277, TFX1935, MHS819, MHO2636 were displayed on this day.
The Candy scheme lasted as the main livery till 1992 when replaced by the Freight Rail blue livery, although from 1988 a simplified version known as the red terror livery emerged from Cardiff workshops applied to 4469, this scheme omitted the yellow & orange stripes, thus reducing the amount of time required to paint the units, and was used mainly on non front line locomotives (44, 45, 48, 49 classes), other locos of the 422, 442, 80, 81’s continued to receive the full candy livery.
During the 10 years that the Candy livery was the prominent livery the following locomotives carried this scheme.

Locomotive Livery Profiles = NSWR Reverse Livery

The New South Wales Railways introduced a modified version of the original Indian livery in 1979 (1st loco was 4479) in an effort to improve locomotive visibility, this new livery was known as the Reverse or yellow ended livery, which involved and all over Indian red body with yellow ends, with the yellow extending around the sides of the units to usually either the cab windows or door, this yellow area being broken up by the application of the wings in indian red seen prior on the original livery in yellow, the livery extended to Railcars aswell. This livery didn't last long being replaced by the SRA Candy livery from 1982.
